Sanibel Begins Boardwalk Repairs

The City of Sanibel Public Works Department announces the commencement of the Dune Walkover and Boardwalk Replacement and Repairs Project, which began on Monday, Nov. 2, 2026, and will continue through April 30, 2027.

This project is part of the City’s ongoing recovery and restoration efforts following Hurricane Ian, which caused significant damage to numerous beach access structures throughout the island.

The project includes the replacement of hurricane-damaged dune walkovers at the following locations:

• Bowman’s Beach Park
• Tarpon Bay Road Beach Park
• Gulfside City Beach Park (Algiers)
• Nerita Street Beach Access
• Fulgur Street Beach Access
• Donax Street Beach Access
• Buttonwood Lane (Gulfside) Beach Access
• Lighthouse Beach Park

Stokes Marine, Inc. has been awarded the construction contract and will complete the improvements.

Construction activities will include removing damaged structures and installing new dune walkovers to restore safe, reliable public beach access. Work will be performed at various locations throughout the island during the construction period.

Public Safety and Beach Access

Residents and visitors are advised to use caution when traveling near active construction areas and remain alert for workers, construction equipment, and temporary barricades.

Temporary closures or restrictions to certain beach access points may be necessary while construction activities are underway. The City encourages beachgoers to follow all posted signage, avoid designated construction zones, and follow directions from construction personnel.

The City will make every effort to minimize disruptions to public beach access while ensuring the safety of residents, visitors, and construction crews.

The City of Sanibel appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation as we continue restoring and improving our public beach access infrastructure following Hurricane Ian.
