The City of Sanibel announced that work will begin on the much-anticipated Sanibel Boat Ramp Dock Replacement Project. Construction is scheduled to start on Monday, Sept. 8, 2025, with the boat ramp expected to remain closed for up to 60 days, weather permitting.
During this time, the ramp and adjoining dock structures will be unavailable for public use. 2025 AC and/or BC permit holders will have extended use of the 2025 permit until Jan. 31, 2026.
Additionally, any current 2025 AC and/or BC permit holders who choose to purchase a 2026 AC and/or BC permit will pay a discounted rate due to the overlapping validity periods. For more information, call the Sanibel Recreation Center at (239) 472-0345.
The project involves the complete replacement of the existing wooden dock structures, which have reached the end of their service life. To ensure both safety and accessibility for boaters, the deteriorating docks will be removed and replaced with new, more durable materials.
The concrete boat ramp and concrete walkways will remain in place and will not require replacement. By focusing on the dock structures, the project will enhance safety, improve accessibility, and provide a more user-friendly experience for the boating community upon completion.
While the Sanibel Boat Ramp is closed, boaters are encouraged to use the Lee County Punta Rassa Boat Ramp, conveniently located across the Sanibel Causeway Bridge on the mainland, adjacent to the Sanibel Causeway Toll Booth. This facility will remain open and continue to provide access to the surrounding waters during the closure period.
The city acknowledges the temporary inconvenience that the closure may cause and appreciates the community’s patience as these necessary improvements are implemented. Once finished, the upgraded docks will provide a safer and more reliable facility to serve Sanibel residents and visitors for many years to come.
Ongoing Recovery and Safety Notice
The Sanibel Island beach parks have undergone extensive restoration efforts to ensure public safety and enjoyment. While the beaches are open, visitors are urged to exercise caution.
Due to the recent hurricanes, there is potential for buried debris both on land and in the water. Beach-goers should remain vigilant and avoid areas where debris may be present. Swimming and wading should be done with care, and wearing protective footwear is recommended.
