City Council on June 3, 2025, unanimously approved an expenditure of $29,200 for a feasibility study of establishing three travel lanes on the existing Sanibel Causeway. The study was solicited following resident requests that the City conduct a study to determine if the causeway would support three travel lanes to help move traffic off the island more quickly during periods of congestion.
The consultant will evaluate the causeway for three lanes of travel against Florida’s minimum design standards for roadway and bridge construction.
Previously, the proposal for three-lane traffic was raised in conjunction with discussions of a possible roundabout at the “four- way” stop.
Lee County Department of Transportation Director Rob Price has reviewed and approved the scope of services provided in the proposal. However, in discussion with Board of County Commissioners Chair Kevin Ruane, Mayor Mike Miller said Ruane expressed “skepticism” about the plan.
The consultant will conduct/attend and facilitate meetings including, among others, one Planning Commission meeting and one City Council meeting.

It’s about time!
