The Sanibel City Council at its November 3, 2026 meeting, addressed a number of issues related to the nearing expiration dates of several provisions of the Code.
(1) Nonconformances. Extend the deadline to re-establish nonconforming uses & structures substantially damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Ian. That deadline expires December 31, 2026, and Council extended it to December 31, 2027.
(2) Conditional Uses. This provision allows for administrative approval of certain conditional use permits, eliminating the need to go to the Sanibel Planning Commission. This deadline, too, would be extended one year to December 31, 2027.
(3) Development Permits. Allowing development permits to implement waivers, variances, and conditional uses to be accepted as shortform development permits.
All of these will next go to second reading and public hearing at the December 1, 2026, City Council meeting, at 9:05 a.m.
