Gopher Tortoise Day Proclamation. City Council, on behalf of the citizens and visitors of Sanibel, declared April 10, 2026, as Gopher Tortoise Day on Sanibel Island, and urges all citizens to celebrate the Gopher Tortoise and to help protect a keystone species of this island. The island’s gopher tortoises, their burrows, and their habitats have been slow to recover from the impacts of severe tropical weather since 2022. The recovery of gopher tortoise populations and their habitats on Sanibel will require continued commitment by Sanibel’s citizens to the protection measures set forth in City and State laws. Citizens can show their appreciation and help ensure the survival and long-term recovery of gopher tortoises on Sanibel by creating a “tortoise-friendly landscape” that includes a variety of native grasses and wildflowers, and by keeping a watchful eye for gopher tortoises while driving and walking around Sanibel.

Believing in Girls Month Proclamation. City Council hereby proclaims the month of March as “Believing in Girls Month” in the City of Sanibel and encourages all communities, organizations, and individuals to reflect on the importance of believing in the power and potential of girls. Every girl deserves to be celebrated for her uniqueness and aspirations and deserves to have her voice heard, her dreams supported, and her achievements acknowledged. Pace Center for Girls is instrumental in helping provide a better future through education, counseling, training, and advocacy. Pace Center for Girls recognizes the unique needs of young women and collaborates with Florida’s Department of Children and Families, Department of Education, and Department of Juvenile Justice to empower girls to believe in themselves.

Water Conservation Month Proclamation. City Council proclaimed April 2026 as “Water Conservation Month” in the City of Sanibel and encouraged all citizens to be proactive in conserving and protecting Sanibel’s clean, sustainable water resources, which are vital to our environment, economy, and quality of life.

World Landscape Architecture Month Proclamation. City Council proclaimed April 2026 as Landscape Architecture Month, and Wednesday, April 1, 2026, as Professional Landscape Architecture Day, and encouraged residents to recognize the important role landscape architects play in preserving and strengthening Sanibel’s natural beauty. Landscape architecture integrates science, planning, and design to shape resilient, safe, and environmentally responsible communities. The City of Sanibel depends on the thoughtful stewardship of its natural systems and sanctuary island character, advanced by professionally licensed landscape architects who design resilient landscapes with native vegetation that preserve ecological integrity and sustain the island’s unique sense of place. Landscape architects play a vital role in protecting Sanibel’s environment, supporting sustainable tourism, and strengthening the City’s recovery and resilience in the face of coastal hazards and climate change.
