With the rise in outdoor activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sanibel Fire & Rescue District reported a 20 percent increase in beach campfire permits issued during the 2020-21 season compared to the previous season. Permits are only issued from Oct. 1 thru Feb. 14 each year. This ensures a safe nesting season for the local shorebirds and sea turtles that come to Sanibel Island.
“We love that visitors, or our seasonal residents, can take advantage of a unique experience here on the island,” said Deputy Fire Cheif Kevin Barbot. “For more information on the restrictions we encourage everyone to visit our website.”
