A Sanibel man is charged with driving under the influence and felony drug possession after police received a call of a possible intoxicated driver.

Matthew Taylor, 40, was traveling west on Sanibel Captiva Road at 9:32 a.m. Saturday, June 20, when an officer observed his vehicle, which matched the caller’s description, swerving and nearly striking the back of a vehicle near Bowman’s Beach Road.

Taylor was reportedly unsteady on his feet and smelled of alcohol. He failed a field sobriety test and refused a breath test. He was issued a warning for an expired vehicle registration and a citation for following too closely, in addition to the DUI and felony drug possession charges. He was released from the Lee County Jail on June 23 on a $5,750 bond.

Police were dispatched to a two-vehicle accident without injuries at 5:43 p.m. Saturday, June 20, at Causeway Boulevard and Harbour Cottage Court. Merritt Sacks, Naples, Fla., stopped his vehicle when a vehicle in front of him stopped for a turtle in the road and the back of his vehicle was struck by a vehicle operated by Max Ainsworth, Bonita Springs, Fla.

Two vehicles collided in the parking lot of Huxter’s Market & Deli on Periwinkle Way at 10:34 a.m. Tuesday, June 23. A Coastal Beverages truck operated by Yoandry Gamez struck the side of a parked Coca-Cola truck operated by Marvin Arteaga. No citations were issued.
