Mike Greenwell

Sanibel Mayor Mike Miller took time before the invocation at Tuesday’s City Council meeting to honor Mike Greenwell, the former Red Sox outfielder and Lee County Commissioner who died on October 9 at the age of 62 from medullary thyroid cancer.

Known as “The Gator,” Greenwell played all 12 of his major league seasons with the Boston Red Sox. After his baseball career, he returned to his hometown of Fort Myers, where he built several family businesses, including “Mike Greenwell’s Bat-A-Ball & Family Fun Park.”

Greenwell served as a Lee County Commissioner for District 5 after being appointed to the Board of County Commissioners by Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2022 and elected to the position in 2024.

Mayor Miller called for a moment of silence.
