Sanibel Police Blotter: Five Criminal Citations Issued

A traffic stop was initiated Thursday, Feb. 8 on a vehicle for running a stop sign. The driver was subsequently issued a warning for running the stop sign and a criminal citation for never having a driver’s license issued.

A traffic stop was initiated Friday, Feb. 9 on a vehicle for excessive speed. The driver was subsequently issued a criminal citation for criminal speed (66 MPH in a 35 MPH zone) and a warning for possession of marijuana not more than 20 grams. The marijuana was taken in for destruction.

A traffic stop was initiated Saturday, Feb. 10 on a vehicle for excessive speed. The driver was subsequently issued a criminal citation for criminal speed (62 MPH in a 30 MPH zone) and a citation for expired registration.

Officers responded Monday, Feb. 12 to a two-vehicle crash with no reported injuries. One of the drivers was subsequently issued a criminal citation for never having a driver’s license issued.

A traffic stop was initiated Monday, Feb. 12 on a vehicle with an expired tag. The driver was subsequently issued a criminal citation for knowingly driving with a suspended license and a warning for the expired tag.

Additionally, the police department responded to a total of four traffic crashes and made 80 traffic stops from Feb. 6 to Feb. 12. The traffic stops resulted in 28 citations, two written warnings and 56 verbal warnings. Officers made a total of 939 checks of business and residential areas.

A criminal citation is also known as a Notice to Appear, which is issued in lieu of a physical arrest. The recipient of a criminal citation or NTA is required to appear in a designated court at a specified date and time.
