Sanibel Police Busy Last Week With Several Vehicle Crashes

A bicyclist was injured after being struck by a vehicle. William Baber of Sanibel was crossing Periwinkle Way at Dixie Beach Boulevard on Thursday, Feb. 3, when a vehicle operated by Abraham Murillo of Cape Coral, struck his bicycle in the crosswalk.

Murillo was making a left turn from Dixie Beach to Periwinkle and attempted to turn behind Baber’s bicycle. Baber was transported to Lee Health for treatment of his injuries. Murillo was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian.

Kimberly Bletzer of Weatlogue, Conn., was making a left turn Friday, Jan. 4, from 2006 Periwinkle Way, when her vehicle struck a westbound vehicle operated by Terrance Donnelly of Madison, Wisc., which then caused her vehicle to strike an eastbound vehicle operated by Tracy Finan of Lyndhurst, Ohio. No injuries were reported.

Michael Marcus of Sanibel was attempting to park Saturday, Feb. 5 at Doc Ford’s restaurant, 2500 Island Inn Rd., when his foot became stuck under the brake causing his vehicle to strike a lift station. No injuries were reported.

Morganna Anholt of Fort Myers was traveling west on Periwinkle Way at 2:06 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, when the back of her vehicle was struck by a vehicle operated by Kevin Skinner of Cape Coral. No injuries were reported.

James Peace of Lancaster, Va., was stopped at the intersection of West Gulf Drive and Tarpon Bay Road on Monday, Feb. 7, when the back of his vehicle was struck by a vehicle operated by Mary McIntire of Mackinac Island, Mich. A passenger complained of neck pain but refused medical transport. No other injuries were reported.

Octavius Whitus of Sanibel was backing out of a parking space Monday, Feb. 7, at Sanibel Deli, 2330 Palm Ridge Rd., when his vehicle struck the parked vehicle of Peter Shane of Columbus, Ohio.

Cheryl Mudrack of Fort Wayne, Ind., was pulling into a parking space Monday, Feb. 7, at 3880 Sanibel Captiva Rd., when her vehicle sideswiped the parked vehicle of Claudette Beerman.

Kenneth Kouril of Fort Myers was stopped on Periwinkle Way at the intersection of Casa Ybel Road Thursday, Feb. 10, when the back of his vehicle was struck by a vehicle operated by Kathleen Aldrin of Fort Myers. No injuries were reported.

Deborah Mackelcan of Sanibel was traveling west on Periwinkle Way Thursday, Feb. 10, when a vehicle operated by Joseph Benyo of Eagle River, Alaska, pulled into her lane from a driveway at 1975 Periwinkle Way. A passenger was examined for neck pain at the scene by Lee County EMS, but refused transport to the hospital. Benyo was cited for failing to yield the right of way.

Animal Reports

An iguana was sighted Thursday, Feb. 3 in the backyard of residence in the 400 block of East Gulf Drive.

A deceased sea turtle was reported Saturday, Feb. 5 on Algiers Beach. The Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation removed the turtle.

Two large coyotes were sighted Friday, Feb. 4 in the backyard of a residence on Sabal Sands Road. Caller reported they frequently dig up frogs in the garden, but did not appear aggressive.

Two large coyotes were sighted crossing the road Sunday, Jan. 6 at Wildlife Drive and Sanibel Captiva Road. They did not appear aggressive.

A bird with fishing line around its bill was reported Sunday, Jan. 6 at Bailey Beach Road. Volunteers from Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife collected the bird for treatment.

A deceased manatee was found on the beach Tuesday, Feb. 8, in the Silver Key area at the west end of Bowman’s Beach. Florida Wildlife Commission was made aware of the manatee and would respond to its location.

An iguana was sighted Wednesday, Feb. 9 in the front yard of residence on Donax Street.
