Sanibel Sea School will offer a week-long winter camp from Dec. 27 to Dec. 31 themed “Year of the Tiger (Shark).”
2022 is the Year of the Tiger in the Chinese Zodiac. Symbolizing strength and bravery, the tiger is a king of all beasts. Additionally, each zodiac sign is associated with one of five elements and 2022 happens to be the year of the Water Tiger. Inspired by this ancient tradition, Sanibel Sea School is taking a salty spin and honoring the tiger shark for Winter Camp 2021!
There will be tons of tiger shark themed activities, seining, snorkeling, and of course, surfing in the Gulf. Campers will learn about the tiger shark’s critical role in the ocean and how they can help them thrive.
To close out the week Sanibel Sea School will hold an annual ceremony, Give Your Worries to the Sea, to wash away all troubles from 2021. “The ocean is a special place that has the ability to help us heal,” says Youth Education Director Shannon Stainken. “Every year we ask campers to trust us and show them how therapeutic it can be to let go and give their worries away for a moment. We are grateful to share this experience with campers – it’s really magical.”
Winter camp is designed for campers ages 6-13 and Counselors in Training ages 13-17.
Registration will open at 10 a.m. EST Saturday, Oct. 23 at the Sanibel Sea School website.

With COVID-19 still prevalent in Florida, Sanibel Sea School staff will take the necessary steps to maximize safety of their participants, staff, and the community. Camp will be limited to a smaller number of participants, staff will wear masks and conduct health screenings daily, and they will ensure proper sanitation of all field gear and classroom spaces.
