With the appointment of Tiffany Burns to the Planning Commission, for the first time there are three women on the Planning Commission and two women in City Council. They are: Tiffany Burns (Planning), Holly Smith (Council), Erika Steiner (Planning, Vice Chair), Kate Sergeant (Planning), and Laura DeBruce (Council).
“Having women in leadership positions provides our island with diverse perspectives and an inclusive culture,” said Steiner. “Having intelligent, strong women in leadership provides us with great mentoring, support, and collaboration. I am so proud to be among this team of five committed women taking an active role in our critical path forward!”
Said Sergeant, “Having three women on Planning Commission and two on City Council is a great start. I’m honored to be one of them, but I am reminded of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s response when she was asked when there will be enough women on the Supreme Court: ‘When there are nine.’ She noted this shouldn’t be shocking because ‘there’d been nine men, and nobody’s ever raised a question about that.’”
