UPDATE: The community responded to the SCCF sea turtle team’s request for towels and they received more than enough towels to fully replenish its supply lost in Hurricane Ian.

Sea turtle nesting season is underway with 10 nests, reports the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation sea turtle team, who are in need of towels for their work. The is asking the community to replenish its supply of towels to cover buckets used to hold and protect hatchlings. The team recently responded to a couple of live strandings of sea turtles, which requires wet towels during transport.

SCCF lost all of its towels in Hurricane Ian and would greatly appreciate donations of any size and shape of towels. Donations can be dropped off at 3399 Sanibel Captiva Rd., or shipped to:
Kelly Sloan, Coastal Wildlife Director
3399 Sanibel Captiva Road
Sanibel, FL 33957

The sea turtle team also reports this season is on track to be a record-breaking one, with more than 806 nests, including 18 green sea turtle nests, to date on Sanibel and Captiva. The last record season was in 2020, when there were 595 nests laid by this time and concluded with a total of 931 nests. Sea turtle nesting season ends Oct. 31.
