Schaeffer To Speak At Next PCI Meeting

National political consultant and local resident Bob Schaeffer will speak on “Campaign 2024 – How to Win Elections that Protect Democracy” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16 for a meeting of Progressive Club of the Islands at the Sanibel Community House, 2173 Periwinkle Way.

The meeting will be the first in-person gathering of the PCI after three years of meeting solely by Zoom due to Covid and Hurricane Ian. Schaeffer’s presentation will be available online, too. To attend via Zoom email pcisancap@gmail.com to receive a link or watch via Facebook.

Schaeffer’s talk will analyze 2024 electoral prospects and offer practical guidance for effective involvement in critical campaigns. It will cover races at the national, statewide Florida and local levels. The speaker is currently President of FairDistricts Now, the Florida statewide districting reform organization, Treasurer of the Progress Florida Education Institute, and a Board member of the Floridians for Democracy Institute.

Since 1970, Schaeffer has held senior positions with statewide and local campaigns for both candidates and ballot questions. He specializes in strategic planning, field organization and earned media. As a consultant, he has designed and managed campaigns, trained senior staff, and built broad-based electoral coalitions.

Over the past five decades, Schaeffer has led more than 300 workshops on political campaign management, strategic planning and advocacy skills for groups in 43 states, Canada and Russia. His publications include the popular political campaign handbook “Winning Local and State Elections (Simon & Shuster), Giving the Media Your Message, and The News Media and the Big Lie.

Prior to becoming a full-time consultant in 1984, Schaeffer was Editorial Writer at the NBC-Affiliate in Boston, host of a talk show on a regional National Public Radio station, and writer for an alternative weekly paper. He previously served as Research Director for the Massachusetts Legislature’s Human Services Committee and staffed several activist groups in New England.

The meeting is interactive with time provided for questions. Annual dues for the Progressive Club are $35 for an individual or $70 for a couple.
