Dr. Ken Piech will discuss shell collecting in the Florida Keys

Dr. Ken Piech will discuss shell collecting in the Florida Keys as the featured speaker at the next meeting of the Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club on Sunday, Feb. 11 at the Sanibel Recreation Center, 3880 Sanibel Captiva Rd. A visitor to, and now resident of, Sanibel, Dr Piech and his wife, Alice, are avid shell collectors with a special interest in snorkeling and collecting shells in the Florida Keys. Over time, they have amassed an amazing collection of helmets, conchs, cowries, tuns, tellins, vase shells, tritons and nerites.

Dr. Piech’s presentation will focus on the different locations and habitats where shells can be found in the Keys, and as a special treat, he and Alice will be giving away some of the shells that they have collected.

The public is invited, and doors to the Osprey Room will open at 1:30 p.m. for a silent auction and an opportunity for members to visit with each other. The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. in the Pelican Room. Free parking is available on site.

The Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club awards grants from the proceeds of their annual Sanibel Shell Show. Grants are given towards education and research in the fields of conchology and malacology, as well as for conservation and water quality projects, primarily in Southwest Florida.
