The Shell Islands Garden Club is selling three caladiums for $10, and uses the funds for horticultural educational programs and as a non-profit, any surplus funds is donated to other, mostly island, nonprofits, such as the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation, Sanibel Historical Village garden, Sanibel Community House, etc.
The six caladium selections this year are:
• All are #1 tuber/bulbs which bloom faster and fuller than the more common and smaller #2 bulbs in the last sale
• Although the size of the tubers/bulbs offered have increased, they are still 3 for $10.
• There are sun tolerant varieties
• Bulbs are far bigger and heartier than those of the last supplier
Caladium tubers/bulbs are an easy way to maintain summer color here or for planting at your summer residence elsewhere. They may be planted directly in the garden or in containers such as in large or small pots on a lanai, or hanging baskets. In climates where it is likely to reach below 40 degrees, planting in containers is easier as the containers can be moved to a garage or basement to winter. In the spring the containers can be moved back to the garden where the plants will regrow. Many of us have caladiums that even survived Ian.
Once planted the caladiums will require minimal care… just the preferred sun/shade location and water.
