Shoreline Stabilization Issue to Come Back to Commission

by SC Reporter Emilie Alfino

Sanibel’s Planning Department staff presented proposed amendments to the Sanibel Planning Commission to change Alternative Shoreline Stabilization Projects from having to go before the Planning Commission to being reviewed by Planning Department staff.

The Land Development Code Review Subcommittee had concerns with allowing shoreline stabilization projects to go without a public hearing and had multiple questions.

Staff also presented a change of name to Living Shoreline Stabilization Projects with standards for all water bodies, both human-made and natural, allowing for administrative review for human-made, and retaining conditional use permit (Planning Commission review) for natural water bodies.

After comments and questions, the LDC Review Subcommittee voted to move the proposed amendments to the Planning Commission for review.

The same thing happened at the May 13 Planning Commission meeting when there were too many questions to resolve the matter, and it was decided to bring it back to the Commission’s next meeting May 27. Commissioners will have one week to submit their questions and comments to City Clerk Scotty Lynn Kelly.
