A teenage driver was arrested on Monday, Oct. 14, and charged with leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving.
Seventeen-year-old Anthony Zummo, Cape Coral, was traveling north on Bowman’s Beach Road at a high rate of speed, when he lost control of his vehicle as he attempted to make a right turn onto Sanibel Captiva Road. Zummo’s vehicle crossed the eastbound lane and struck a westbound vehicle operated by Deanna Schwartz, 82, Fort Myers.
Numerous witnesses, including members of the nearby Sanibel Fire Department, were able to get Zummo’s license plate number and take photographs of his vehicle as he left the scene. Police quickly located Zummo’s vehicle traveling east on Periwinkle Way and conducted a traffic stop. He was ordered out of the vehicle and detained in handcuffs.
Zummo’s three juvenile passengers told police he was driving too fast and didn’t stop after the accident because his insurance would go up. Police searched Zummo’s vehicle and discovered multiple electronic cigarette devices in the passenger area. Zummo was transported to the Lee County Juvenile Detention Center and his friends were released to their parents.
A driver was cited for failure to yield, after his vehicle struck a bicyclist. Daniel Howes, 50, Fort Myers, was westbound on Periwinkle Way at 10:01 a.m. Monday, Oct. 14, when he stopped to make a left turn into the parking lot of Mudbug Cajun Kitchen, 1473 Periwinkle Way. As he made his turn, his vehicle struck the bicycle of Philip Olsson, 80, Sanibel, which was traveling west on the Shared Use Path. Olsson received minor injuries, but refused medical treatment at the scene.
Humberto Garciga, 39, Miami, was traveling on Sanibel Captiva Road at 2:41 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, when he slowed to turn onto Pine Avenue and the back of his vehicle was struck by a vehicle operated by William Zimmer, 40, Fort Myers. No injuries were reported.
