What’s Up With Dairy Queen on Sanibel?

by SC Reporter Emilie Alfino, photo by Managing Editor Shannen Hayes

The new owner of the property at 1048 Periwinkle Way, formerly the Dairy Queen, proposes to build a restaurant with 45 seats, though this has not yet been approved. It will serve burgers, fries, and shakes.

The missing top half of the building will be restored to its original condition, but not as a Dairy Queen. Dairy Queen would not extend the franchise agreement and insisted that, if it did, it would have to rebuild in a “cookie-cutter” architectural style, which would not be permitted under Sanibel’s Land Development Code.

So, no more blizzards. Maybe something better awaits.
