SUMMARY:Audubon Lecture: Two Useful Apps
DESCRIPTION:The Sanibel Captiva Audubon Society is excited to announce the start of their mini lecture series this season at 5:30 p.m. on February 11 at the Community House. The first presenter is Alli Smith\, a project coordinator with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Smith will present on the useful apps eBird and Merlin Bird ID. Smith will elaborate on how to contribute to these apps\, how they work behind the scenes\, and how data from these apps are used by scientists for bird conservation. \nSmith’s love of birds was sparked on a middle-school field trip to Cape May to see the annual spring spawning of horseshoe crabs and the shorebirds that depend on them. She attended the Young Birders Event at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in 2011 and learned about careers in bird conservation\, and later earned a B.S. in Wildlife Science from the State University of New York\, College of Environmental Science and Forestry. \nSince graduating\, Smith has worked in Southwest Florida with shorebirds\, burrowing owls\, and community science. She strongly believes in the power of birds to connect people to one another and to conservation. Smith has found the most impactful experiences to be working with participatory scientists\, volunteers\, and birders\, which is what has led her to her current role with Merlin and eBird. \nBirding and participatory science have a significant positive impact on conservation and our understanding of birds\, and eBird and Merlin are fantastic ways for birders of all levels to connect with the birds around them. \nSmith connects people to the Cornell Lab’s Merlin Bird ID and eBird through talks\, webinars\, and other outreach activities\, while assisting eBird and Merlin users by managing the help desk. Smith loves supporting both new and experienced birders\, and these apps are amazing tools that can help anybody learn! \nSan-Cap Audubon Society board members are excited to host Smith and explore an app many birders use daily. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased on San-Cap Audubon’s website. If tickets are not purchased in advance\, they will cost $10 at the door.

SUMMARY:Audubon: Kites and Kestrels
DESCRIPTION:The Sanibel Captiva Audubon Society is excited to announce their third\, and last\, lecture of the year: The conservation biology of two famously Floridian raptors: Swallow-tailed Kites and Southeastern American Kestrels from Dr. Ken Meyer of the Avian Research Conservation Institute. Dr. Meyer will provide history and updates for the long-term studies by Avian Research and Conservation Institute (ARCI) on two raptor species that share a common dependance on Florida’s distinctive native plant and animal biodiversity: the Swallow-tailed Kite\, a long-distance neotropical migrant; and the Southeastern American Kestrel\, a non-migratory genetically distinct subspecies. Dr. Meyer’s presentation highlights the importance of native insect species\, and the communities that support these species\, to the survival and successful reproduction of these charismatic and threatened birds of prey. He also will tell us about ARCI’s strategies for turning careful\, timely research into well-crafted management practices that can – and should – be delivered by federal and state natural resource agencies\, public conservation and citizen-science organizations\, timber companies\, and private land owners and managers. \nDr. Meyer\, who received his B.S. in Zoology from the University of Maine and his Ph.D in Zoology/Behavioral Ecology from the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill)\, has studied the conservation biology of birds in Florida and beyond since the 1980’s\, beginning with his research on Swallow-tailed Kites\, which continues to this day. After serving as a Post-doctoral Associate and then Research Associate at the University of Florida from 1988 to 1992\, he conducted studies of Red-cockaded Woodpeckers and the bird communities of south Florida pinelands for the National Park Service in Big Cypress National Preserve and Everglades National Park. In 1997\, Ken co-founded ARCI and soon branched out to other research challenges on a broader range of species. He has served on species status-review committees for state agencies and biological review panels for National Wildlife Refuges; and as a graduate student advisor and committee member in his position as an adjunct Associate Professor in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation at the University of Florida. Ken\, who received a Partners in Flight Research Award for his contributions to bird conservation\, provides frequent university guest lectures\, conducts training workshops for conservation professionals\, and presents many programs each year to citizen conservation groups on ARCI’s research and its implications for bird conservation. He feels very fortunate that\, in his many roles for ARCI\, he seems to have found the best of many professional worlds. \nNo reservations are required. Seating will begin at 5:30 p.m. A $10 suggested donation is always welcomed.

DESCRIPTION:For the second year\, the Sanibel Captiva Audubon Society will provide a photography program for bird enthusiasts who want to learn the basics of bird photography. \nTopics that will be covered during this program range from lighting and composition to photography gear (i.e.\, iPhones\, 35mm mirrorless cameras\, etc.)\, how to capture different ‘subjects’ (i.e.\, birds\, scenery\, people\, etc.)\, and capturing birds in flight. \nThe program will consist of two parts\, each roughly 45 minutes to an hour long. The first part will be discussing the topics mentioned above in a group setting. The second part will involve a stroll down either Indigo Trail or Wildlife Drive\, looking for avian subjects to capture images of. \nFor those interested in learning some tips and tricks for bird photography\, the program will meet at 9 a.m. Wednesday\, Jan. 29\, at the newly constructed ‘Roost’ next to the main parking lot of the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. \nThis program is free of charge. There is a $10 fee to drive through Wildlife Drive (Fee Booth prefers cash for small amounts) or show an entrance pass or duck stamp.

We hope this program can help bird nerds like ourselves with not only identification but produce nice photos to have for years to come\,” explained San-Cap Audubon board member\, Karl Werner. \nTopics that will be covered during this program range from lighting & composition to photography gear (i.e. iPhones\, 35mm mirrorless cameras etc.) and how to capture different ‘subjects’ (i.e. birds\, scenery\, people etc.). The program will consist of two parts\, both roughly 45 minutes a piece. The first part will be discussing the above mentioned topics in a group setting. The second part will involve a stroll down either Indigo Trail or Wildlife Drive looking for avian subjects to capture images of. ‘The bird life can be unpredictable\,’ mentioned Werner. “We may have enough bird activity to stay on Indigo Trail or we may have to go down Wildlife Drive\, so we recommend being prepared for both\,’ explained Werner. \nFor those who are interested in learning some tips and tricks to bird photography\, the program will meet at the newly constructed ‘Roost’ next to the main parking lot of the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge at 8am on Wednesday February 7th. DESCRIPTION:The Sanibel-Captiva Audubon Society and The International Osprey Foundation is hosting a joint program entitled “Ospreys 2021 – The Revival of a Global Raptor.” \nDr. Alan F. Poole will bring us up to date on the status of one of our best-loved birds of prey using part travelogue\, part biography and part scientific detective story. \nThe past 50 years have seen an extraordinary resurgence in Osprey numbers globally. Locally\, on Sanibel and Fort Myers Beach\, 125 osprey nests are currently being monitored by volunteer nest monitors. This good-news story has been triggered not just by cleaner waters and less contaminated fish\, but also by greening cultures — dedicated groups of people who have built and protected nest sites for Ospreys and have brought the species back to regions where it has been missing for decades. Dr. Poole\, will lead us through this story with dazzling looks at some of the places where Ospreys are found\, and with introductions to a few of the colorful characters who have helped make this Osprey revival possible. \nAlan Poole\, an Associate of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, was editor of the Birds of North America life history series for 22 years. He lives along the Westport River estuaries in southeastern Massachusetts\, and has been studying Ospreys for over 35 years. Alan has written two books on the species to include the recently published Ospreys: the Revival of a Global Raptor; Johns Hopkins Univ.
