DESCRIPTION:For the second year\, the Sanibel Captiva Audubon Society will provide a photography program for bird enthusiasts who want to learn the basics of bird photography. \nTopics that will be covered during this program range from lighting and composition to photography gear (i.e.\, iPhones\, 35mm mirrorless cameras\, etc.)\, how to capture different ‘subjects’ (i.e.\, birds\, scenery\, people\, etc.)\, and capturing birds in flight. \nThe program will consist of two parts\, each roughly 45 minutes to an hour long. The first part will be discussing the topics mentioned above in a group setting. The second part will involve a stroll down either Indigo Trail or Wildlife Drive\, looking for avian subjects to capture images of. \nFor those interested in learning some tips and tricks for bird photography\, the program will meet at 9 a.m. Wednesday\, Jan. 29\, at the newly constructed ‘Roost’ next to the main parking lot of the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. \nThis program is free of charge. There is a $10 fee to drive through Wildlife Drive (Fee Booth prefers cash for small amounts) or show an entrance pass or duck stamp.

SUMMARY:Federal Duck Stamp Contest Winner
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service selects a winning duck stamp for the following year from some 200 contestants. The winning duck stamp artist becomes somewhat of a celebrity\, and\, J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island has the honor of hosting an appearance by the winner each year. Proceeds from the duck stamp program have purchased six million acres of wetlands as preserved habitat in its 90 years of existence. \nNamed for the man responsible for creating the Federal Duck Stamp program\, the refuge\, with support from the “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge (DDWS)\, schedules the artist’s appearance to coincide with Jay Norwood “Ding” Darling’s mid-October birthday. This year\, 2024-2025 Federal Duck Stamp Contest winner Chuck Black will make his appearance at “Ding” Darling on Thursday\, Oct. 24\, for a free 1 p.m. talk open to the public. \nA stamp-signing opportunity will follow his presentation. The stamp is currently for sale in the Refuge Nature Store. \nThe Montana artist worked as a wildlife biologist for seven years before devoting himself to his first love – wildlife art. His wins for the California and Colorado state duck stamp contests led to his decision to paint full-time.

SUMMARY:Audubon Photography 'Tips & Tricks'
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday February 7th\, the Sanibel Captiva Audubon Society will be providing a photography program for bird enthusiasts who would like to learn a few basics of bird photography. San-Cap Audubon is excited to add a small program this season along with their weekly bird walks. “Capturing images of birds can be harder than it looks. We hope this program can help bird nerds like ourselves with not only identification but produce nice photos to have for years to come\,” explained San-Cap Audubon board member\, Karl Werner. \nTopics that will be covered during this program range from lighting & composition to photography gear (i.e. iPhones\, 35mm mirrorless cameras etc.) and how to capture different ‘subjects’ (i.e. birds\, scenery\, people etc.). The program will consist of two parts\, both roughly 45 minutes a piece. The first part will be discussing the above mentioned topics in a group setting. The second part will involve a stroll down either Indigo Trail or Wildlife Drive looking for avian subjects to capture images of. ‘The bird life can be unpredictable\,’ mentioned Werner. “We may have enough bird activity to stay on Indigo Trail or we may have to go down Wildlife Drive\, so we recommend being prepared for both\,’ explained Werner. \nFor those who are interested in learning some tips and tricks to bird photography\, the program will meet at the newly constructed ‘Roost’ next to the main parking lot of the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge at 8am on Wednesday February 7th. This program is free of charge. There is a $10 fee to drive through Wildlife Drive (Fee Booth prefers cash for small amounts) or show an entrance pass or duck stamp. If you are unable to attend this program\, the Sanibel Captiva Audubon Society holds bird walks on Saturdays at 8am; locations\, days and times are subject to change. Please visit our website at http://www.san-capaudubon.org for an up-to-date schedule.

SUMMARY:Estate Planning 101
DESCRIPTION:Representatives from three local legal\, tax accounting\, and financial advisory firms will team up with the “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge (DDWS) on Tuesday\, Jan. 30\, for a free Estate Planning 101 panel presentation at the “Ding” Darling Visitor & Education Center from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. with free continental breakfast provided by DDWS. \nSanibel wills\, trusts\, and estate planning attorney Janet Strickland; Trevor Swartz and Jack Thomas\, managing directors and partners at HighTower Advisors/Thomas and Swartz Wealth Management; and a local certified public account to be announced will present information about the importance of estate planning and how to get started with the process. After the presentation\, attendees will have time to meet individually with the speakers to ask questions. \n“We see this free ‘class’ as providing a valuable public service and giving attendees insights\, guidance\, and tools to help them plan their estate or develop questions for their own advisors and family members\,” said DDWS executive director Ann-Marie Wildman. “It provides a means to take that first step for those who haven’t already done so and may feel overwhelmed with the process.” \nAttendance is free but limited on a first-come basis. Attendees need not be members of DDWS or intending to include it in their will. For more information\, contact DDWS at 239-789-8991.

SUMMARY:(REFUGE) Art In The Wild
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge hosts the winning duck stamp artist in October to celebrate National Wildlife Refuge and the birthday of the refuge’s namesake\, the very first duck stamp artist in 1935. Artist-cartoonist Jay Norwood “Ding” Darling\, in fact\, is largely responsible for the Federal Duck Stamp Program\, which has purchased six million acres of now-protected wetlands since its inception. \nJames Hautman is the only federal duck stamp artist to have taken first place six times\, most recently in 2021 during the 2022-2023 Federal Duck Stamp Contest. Considering that more than 100 typically compete each year in the contest\, and that winners are not allowed to compete for the next three years\, Hautman’s accomplishment has made a hallowed name for him in wildlife art circles. He and his two brothers\, Joseph and Robert — also multiple duck stamp contest winners — even made the script for the 1996 hit comedic movie Fargo. \nREAD MORE
