DESCRIPTION:The Interfaith Outreach of SanCap invites the community to its 2025 Shared Scholar Program\, a free musical lecture “When The Soul Sings\, The Spirit Soars” by Florida Gulf Coast University Music Department Leader Dr. Thomas Cimarusti. A catered reception with heavy hors d’oeuvres\, beverages and desserts will be held in the SCUCC’s Fellowship Hall following Dr. Cimarusti’s musical lecture. \nDr. Cimarusti is a Professor of Music History and Music Degree Program Leader at Florida Gulf Coast University\, with a vast array of musical research interests. Dr. Sklar said she expects “all who attend will come away with a genuine feeling that when the soul sings\, the spirit truly soars!” \nThis event is made possible by the Leo Rosner Foundation and by an interfaith coalition of congregations on Sanibel and Captiva\, including Bat Yam Temple of the Islands\, Captiva Chapel by the Sea\, Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church\, and Sanibel Congregational UCC. The event will also benefit F.I.S.H.\, which asks that attendees please bring canned good or non-perishable items for donation\, and which will be holding a 50/50 Raffle for all attendees.

SUMMARY:Purim Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Lines are learned\, songs rehearsed\, costumes made\, and posters posted. Bat Yam Temple of the Islands is ready to celebrate Purim. The much-anticipated musical retelling of the Purim story will be in the sanctuary at Sanibel Congregational Church of Christ. \nThe celebration is free and open to the public. Following the program\, all are invited to enjoy Purim-themed refreshments in Fellowship Hall. Among the treats will be hamantaschen\, the traditional jam-filled cookies whose triangular shape resembles the three-corned hat worn by Haman\, the villain in the story. \nThe cast includes Bat Yam members Vickie Fuchs\, who will portray Esther; Cantor Murray Simon as Haman; Ben Yokel as Bigthan; Edina Lessack as Mordecai; Sally Sacks as Vashti; and Alan Sacks as Teresh. In what all concerned believe is history-making casting\, the Rev. Dr. John H. Danner will once again play the role of King Ahasueras. \nDr. Danner is Senior Pastor of SCUCC\, where Bat Yam holds services. The two congregations share many activities and much mutual respect and admiration.\nRabbi Dr. Stephen Lewis Fuchs will portray Hatach the storyteller and will narrate the Purim story of the Bible’s Book of Esther. Tanya Hochschild will introduce the story\, which commemorates the time when Esther\, Queen of Persia\, saved the Jewish people from execution by Haman\, the king’s advisor. When Esther told her husband\, the king\, of her Jewish heritage and asked him to spare her people\, he bowed to her wishes. \nPianist Abbey Allison will accompany the musical numbers that are sung to familiar tunes but with original lyrics written by the cast members\, to hilarious effect. The audience boos Haman and shakes noisemakers called groggers. While those will be available\, everyone is encouraged to also bring a container full of coins as a noisemaker. The proceeds will then be given to local charities. \nDespite all the frivolity and fun\, the Purim story confronts vital philosophical questions such as the place and dignity of women in society\, the age-old phenomenon of prejudice and the very meaning of life. All of us\, like Esther\, have moments when our action or inaction can make a vital difference in someone’s life. We can seize these moments or turn away from them.

SUMMARY:Mardi Gras Worship Service
DESCRIPTION:Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ marks the last Sunday before Lent with their annual Mardi Gras Sunday services February 23 at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Members from Island Jazz will regale the congregation with New Orleans jazz during the services along with the church’s Blended Music Team at the 9:00 a.m. service\, and the choir at 11:00 a.m. worship. Usher’s will be handing out beads for worshipers\, and the front of the sanctuary will be adorned with masks to add to the festive atmosphere. \nMardi Gras originates from the practice necessary in the day’s prior to refrigeration in order to use up fats in a home’s pantry that would otherwise spoil before the start of Lent and the seven-week period of fasting. Over the centuries it has expanded into the festivals worldwide known today\, most famously in New Orleans and in Brazil. All are welcome to join. For more information\, please call the church at 239-472-0497 or check out http://www.sanibelucc.org.
