Although we limit many sections to two sign-ups\, larger groups or families can participate together.\n• If you would like to sign up a large group\, email coastalwatch@sccf.org with your beach site request and how many participants.\n• Download the CleanSwell app to track the amount and type of trash collected as part of the event (Data sheets will be provided on the day of for those who prefer a hard copy). \nWhat to Know Day of the Event:\n• All participants will meet at 9 a.m. at the Sanibel Sea School (455 Periwinkle Way\, Sanibel).\n• Cleanup supplies will be provided the morning of the event — trash buckets\, gloves\, and data sheets. A limited number of free event T-shirts will also be available.\n• At 9:30 a.m.\, participants will depart to their designated beaches. **Parking and transporting collected trash are the participant’s responsibility.**\n• Once filled\, trash buckets are returned to Sanibel Sea School to be weighed and properly disposed. \nAnyone who wishes to participate outside of Sanibel and Captiva can visit the Keep Lee County Beautiful’s site for locations. \nFounded in 1967\, the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation’s mission is to protect and care for Southwest Florida’s coastal ecosystems through its focus on Water Quality Research\, Policy and Advocacy\, Sea Turtles and Shorebirds\, Native Landscaping\, Habitat and Wildlife Management\, and Environmental Education. SCCF’s Coastal Watch is dedicated to preserving Southwest Florida’s estuaries and oceans for future generations — a mission it carries out with the help of committed volunteers who execute projects such as mangrove planting\, oyster gardening\, and beach litter cleanup.

SUMMARY:The Passage Screening
DESCRIPTION:The Ocean Tribe Paddling Club will host a documentary screening of “The Passage”. Join us for an “off the water” social hour with drinks\, snacks and a short paddling documentary. \n“In 1974\, my 20-year-old parents and uncle Andy built their own canoes\, launched them into the Pacific\, and became some of the first people in modern history to canoe from Washington to Alaska up the Inside Passage. My brother and I grew up paddling those wooden canoes in the Virginia rivers and the 1974 adventure became legend in our family – shaping who we’ve become\, how we view our parents\, and how our parents view themselves. In the summer of 2017\, we renovated those canoes and with our aging parents completed their 1974 journey. The Passage is a story about growing up\, growing old\, and the wild places that define us.”

SUMMARY:Winter Shorebird Identification
DESCRIPTION:Like many terms in biology\, the word shorebird can be misleading. In its broadest usage\, it means exactly what it says\, birds that frequent\, or are found along a shoreline. More commonly\, we use it in a narrower sense\, referring to a collection of biologically related birds\, with relatively short legs – the sandpipers and plovers\, that primarily live along shorelines. \nRelative leg length distinguishes shorebirds from wading birds (herons and egrets)\, most of whom have long legs and at times\, do frequent shorelines. We have nothing against wading birds\, we just like to organize living things into groups more manageable by our brains. Wading birds and shorebirds just fall into different biological categories. \nIn ecology\, when two habitats meet\, the transitional zone between them is called an ecotone. Ecotones often support large numbers of species. What most of us call the shoreline (or beach) is an ecotone between water and land – both habitats contributing to the complexity of a very rich unique biological habitat. \nShorebirds are fascinating to watch as they follow waves back and forth\, gleaning the riches of the ocean from the shores of land. They can also be very difficult to identify\, especially in the winter. \nFortunately\, we have a shorebird expert\, willing to help us learn to identify and better enjoy Sanibel’s shorebirds. Audrey Albrecht\, a Shorebird Biologist and Coastal Wildlife Manager for SCCF will hold a shorebird class. Join us for a great time while learning more about our fascinating shorebirds. Call Sanibel Sea School at (239) 472-8585\, or visit our website for registration details. \nPart of the SCCF (Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation) Family\, Sanibel Sea School’s mission is to improve the ocean’s future\, one person at a time. \nby J. Bruce Neill\, Ph.D.\, Director of Education\, Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation
