Historical Village To Honor CHR at Twilight Talk

The Sanibel Historical Village will hold its first Twilight Talk of the year Wednesday, Jan. 15, at the Sanibel Community House, 2173 Periwinkle Way. The topic is “About Community – Community Housing & Resources’ 40th Anniversary.” The program begins promptly at 7 p.m.

“We’re thrilled to be able to offer this Twilight Talk to highlight CHR and all they have done and continue to do for the Sanibel community,” said Historical Village Executive Director Emilie Alfino. “Their program benefits not only the people who are able to take advantage of the housing opportunities, but also our island community, as these new residents take part in community jobs and activities, including volunteering.”

The program will feature Sanibel’s first mayor Porter Goss, who will talk about the city’s beginnings. Mayor Kevin Ruane will discuss the city’s continued involvement with CHR, and Councilman Richard Johnson will talk about the program’s growth.

“CHR is about more than buildings. It’s about people and history,” Alfino added. “CHR and the city of Sanibel can be proud of all they’ve done to make the island a better place and to create opportunity for a lot of people.”

CHR formed in 1979 as a nonprofit to address the growing need for affordable housing on Sanibel. It was in 1983 that an ordinance was passed by the city that established the Affordable Housing program, and CHR was designated as the city’s housing foundation.

The Sanibel Historical Village is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Full guided tours take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at no additional charge, depending on docent availability. The Sanibel Historical Village is located at 950 Dunlop Road (next to BIG ARTS) and there is handicap access to all buildings. Admission is $10 for adults (18 and over).
