American Red Cross Offering Blended Lifeguard Training Course

The American Red Cross is offering Lifeguard Blended Learning, which combines online learning with in-person skills sessions where participants will practice skills and demonstrate competency. The training course gives participants the knowledge and skill set to become professional lifeguards. This course requires all participants to pass the in-water perquisite test on the first day of class in order to continue being enrolled and must be at least 15 years old by completion of course.

The course is from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20 and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21 and Sunday, Aug. 22 at the Sanibel Recreation Center, 3880 Sanibel-Captiva Rd. Cost is $214 for members and $280 for non-members.

Swim Requirements:
• 300-yard continuous swim using front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both
• 2 minutes of treading water with hands in your armpits without stopping
• Within 1 minute and 40 seconds swim 20 yards, retrieve a brick at 7-10 feet deep and then swim 20 yards back to the starting point while both hands are on the brick and face is above water. Exit the pool without using ladder or stairs.

Online Course:
• All participants must complete the entire online course before the first day of class and bring their completion print out to class. Instructions on how to access the online material will be emailed to you one week prior to the start of your course.

To obtain certification participants must be able to attend all online and classroom sessions, complete the pretest, all skill checks and score an 80 percent or higher on the written exam.
