While not returning to the levels of previous year, Sanibel Causeway traffic continues to increase and the city is opening the gulf shore parking lot at Lighthouse Park on June 16. The Sanibel Lighthouse Bayside parking lot will be not be open until July.

“We know that’s an important place. People want to visit it and it’s also important to the businesses that are open that people can get to the lighthouse,” commented City Manager Dana Souza.

The Sanibel Lighthouse is an important symbol because it remained standing tall after Hurricane Ian devastated the island. Its survival forms the basis of the “Sanibel Strong” logo.

Souza also announced city staff are working on West Gulf Drive accesses 3, 5 and 7 and beach parking permit sales, including the boat ramp B/C permit continue to increase.

More than 6,000 vehicles crossed the Sanibel Causeway on Sunday May 30, prior to Memorial Day.
