The Sanibel City Council voted unanimously, with Vice Mayor Holly Smith excused from the meeting, to establish two steering committees – the Sanibel Plan Update Steering Committee and the Transportation Master Plan Steering Committee.
In April 2024, the City was awarded a grant to update the Sanibel Plan and develop a Transportation Master Plan. A request for Proposals to solicit a consultant was issued in March 2025. As part of the public input process, the Planning Department proposed establishing a steering committee for each effort.
The members are:
Sanibel Plan Update Steering Committee (seven members):
• Community Housing and Resources (CHR) – Nicole McHale
• Committee of the Islands (COTI) – Bob Moore
• Sanibel Planning Commission – Larry Schopp (Paul Nichols as Alternate)
• Sanibel Captiva Chamber of Commerce – Calli Johnson
• Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) – James Evans (Matt DePaolis as Alternate)
• Citizen-at-Large (two appointments) – Eric Pfeifer and Jeffrey Muddell
Transportation Master Plan Steering Committee (five members):
• Committee of the Islands (COTI) – Bill Millar (Jeff Blackman as Alternate)
• Sanibel Planning Commission – Erika Steiner (Kate Sergeant as Alternate)
• Sanibel Captiva Chamber of Commerce – Evelyn Stewart
• Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) – James Evans (Matt DePaolis as Alternate)
• Citizen-at-Large (one appointment) – Pasquale Russo
The committees will meet at least monthly with the consultant to provide input on the project. The purpose is to maximize public involvement efforts and maximize the resources available to the consultant to provide feedback on issues in a public forum, representing diverse public interests.
