Sanibel families, residents, educators and community leaders gathered at The Sanibel School on July 24 for a well-attended Community Meet and Greet with the school’s new principal, Dr. Tom Millins.
The event was warmly received by those in attendance, who had the opportunity to meet Dr. Millins, learn about his background, and hear his vision for the future of the island’s K-8 school. The gathering reflected the community’s strong interest in supporting The Sanibel School and building a collaborative relationship with its new leadership.
With more than 27 years of experience in the School District of Lee County, Dr. Millins has served in leadership positions at Edgewood Academy, North Fort Myers Academy for the Arts and Pine Island Elementary School. He was recognized for his student-centered leadership and for helping guide the Pine Island Elementary School community through the aftermath of Hurricane Ian.
During the Meet and Greet, Dr. Millins introduced the school-wide theme, “Charting Our Course: Anchored in Family. Guided by Knowledge. Sailing Together.” He explained that his goals for the school are centered on four essential areas: academics, safety, community and family.
“We are going to chart a course for success for this amazing school—anchored in family, guided by knowledge and sailing together,” Dr. Millins said. “My goals are broken down into four areas: academics, community, safety and family.”
“We are committed to high standards and academic excellence. Like the Sanibel Lighthouse, knowledge will be a constant beacon that guides our students forward and illuminates their potential,” he continued. “Before a student can learn, they must feel secure. We pride ourselves on being a safe harbor where every child is physically protected, emotionally supported and deeply cared for.”
Dr. Millins also emphasized the vital role the community will play in the school’s continued success.
“A ship cannot sail without its crew. This is the community—this is where you come in,” he said. “We will emphasize collaboration, mutual respect and leadership, teaching our students that we are always stronger when we work together.”
He concluded by highlighting the importance of strong partnerships with families.
“If we do not have academics, community, safety and family—if we do not have all four of these—we cannot move ourselves forward,” Dr. Millins said.
Guests also learned about ways to support the school through the Parent Teacher Association, The Sanibel School Fund and volunteer opportunities. The positive response to the event demonstrated a shared commitment to strengthening connections among the school, its families and the wider island community.
The Meet and Greet marked an encouraging beginning to Dr. Millins’ leadership at The Sanibel School. They offered community members a renewed opportunity to become involved in the life and future of the school.
