Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy, who represents Florida’s Seventh District, will be the Progressive Club of the Islands’ guest speaker at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 15, when she will discuss the current state of Florida politics via Zoom.
She serves on the House Ways and Means Committee where she is on the subcommittees of Trade and on Worker and Family. She is also on the House Armed Forces Committee, serving on subcommittees as Vice Chair on Intelligence and Special Operations, and on Tactical Air and Land Forces.
In addition, Murphy serves as co-chair of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of Democrats focused on fiscal responsibility, a strong national defense and a principled and pragmatic approach to governance. She is the first woman of color to lead the Blue-Dog Coalition and the second serving consecutive terms.
Congresswoman Murphy also serves as Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Majority, giving her a seat on the subcommittee’s powerful House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee which recommends committee assignments to the Democratic Caucus and helps shape the House policy agenda.
Before Congress she served as a national security specialist in the office of the U.S. Secretary of Defense, earning numerous rewards for her distinguished service. She holds an M.S in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and a B.A. in Economics from William and Mary.
Congresswoman Murphy is eager to hear from her audience their major concerns which might include among others: protecting voting rights of all U.S. citizens, the fate of the filibuster, and the U.S. Defense Department’s determination to greatly increase the defense budget well beyond the already strong 3 to 1 ratio over China.
