Committee of the Islands (COTI) contributed $5,000 to the Captiva Civic Association (CCA) on Jan. 17 in support of its legal challenge to recent amendments of the Lee County Land Development Code. Those amendments make it possible for South Seas Island Resort to gain approval for significant increases in building heights and hotel room density.

According to the petition filed by the CCA with the Lee County Board of Commissioners, the recent code changes are inconsistent with several provisions of the Lee County Comprehensive Plan. In announcing the contribution, COTI President Larry Schopp said the code changes were unnecessary.

“Rebuilding resiliently does not require adding rooms and additional stories,” he said. “We are very concerned that the enlargement planned for South Seas Resort will have a serious negative impact on the quality of life and public safety on both Sanibel and Captiva. We support the Captiva Civic Association in this action to have the Lee County Code brought into conformity with the Comprehensive Plan.”

“We are grateful to COTI for being an important part of the Protect Captiva Coalition,” said Lisa Riordan, representative for the Protect Captiva Coalition and the CCA. “We look forward to continuing to work together to protect our fragile barrier island communities – both Captiva and Sanibel.”
