Driver Falls Asleep at the Wheel, Vehicle Strikes Tree

A Sanibel Police Officer traveling west on Periwinkle Way at 5:53 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, observed a single vehicle in the middle of the road and it appeared to have been in a crash.

Molanya Bygene, 19, Fort Myers, had been traveling east in the 1100 block of Periwinkle Way when she fell asleep and her vehicle traveled into the westbound lane, struck a tree and came to rest in the middle of the road. Officers assisted Bygene out of the vehicle and she was transported to Health Park for treatment by Lee County Emergency Medical Service.

A vehicle operated by Carlos Mora, 57, Cape Coral, struck the back of a vehicle operated by Donald Basso, 70, Ennismore, Ontario, at 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at the intersection of Tarpon Bay Road and Sanibel Captiva Road. Mora was cited for careless driving.

Ralph Wehens, 54, Earlville, Ill., was waiting to exit the parking lot of the Sanibel Recreation Center at 9:13 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, when he backed up for bicycles on the Shared Use Path and struck the vehicle behind him operated by Jacqueline Burke, 69, Sanibel.
