FISH of SANCAP has announced the date for its 14th annual 10K Race 4 FISH. After two years of a virtual-only race, it returns Oct. 22 with special additions in honor of the organizations 40th anniversary. There are plans for a kids run, business expo and other opportunities to make it an extra-special event.

“We are looking forward to this year’s race and excited to begin planning,” said Race Committee Chair Diane Cortese. “We are offering the option of in-person or virtual.” .

Hortoons creator Dave Horton will once again design the race logo. This year, he will feature the famous alligator character holding the FISH 40th anniversary banner. Horton has been creating cartoons for newsprint since he was in high school and landed a deal with Hallmark as a teenager. His race logo will appear on the front of the race tank, which will be given to the runners.

“Dave is a multi-talented artist and we are grateful to have him design our race logo each year,” said Cortese. “His artistic talent and sense of humor add something special to our race with each design.”

FISH is also once again partnering with The Fort Myers Track Club for race planning and timing runners. FMTC, founded in 1978, offers memberships for all ages and abilities.

FISH has been assisting islanders since 1982 as a “neighbors helping neighbors” organization. It started as a group of volunteer residents and has grown to rely on more than 150 volunteers, as well as a small professional staff, to assist nearly 5,000 neighbors each year.

Last year, FISH distributed more than 5,000 meals to home-bound seniors; 4,294 food backpacks to children; more than 255,000 pounds of food which equated to 213,316 meals; and paid 847 rents, medical and utility bills for those in crisis. The organization is proud to have provided 1,064 doses of the COVID vaccine in 2021 at a pop-up clinic.
