A long-time Sanibel resident worked hard for more than a decade to contribute to his beloved community when an unexpected health crisis left him unable to work and struggling to stay afloat.
Then, he and his family found some relief at F.I.S.H. of SANCAP through its Helping Hands Emergency Financial Assistance Program made possible by donors and partners such as The Sanctuary Golf Club Foundation.
“Our family was scared and overwhelmed, but FISH provided immediate relief and reassurance that we weren’t alone,” the man’s daughter shared. “Their support gave us hope during an incredibly difficult time.”
The man, whom we’ll call “Mr. B.” to protect his privacy, had a persistent cough and woke up one morning unable to breathe. Doctors diagnosed him with a collapsed lung, which required immediate treatment.
Mr. B. and his family had no clear timeline for his recovery, and the financial strain overwhelmed them. The mounting medical co-pays and bills threatened the family’s ability to pay rent, and they feared losing their home amid a difficult time.
Mr. B.’s daughter contacted FISH for assistance, and the staff acted swiftly to help the family in crisis. The Helping Hands Assistance Program covered one month of rent, and FISH provided the family with a gift card to help cover daily expenses.
FISH also stocked the family’s pantry with food for when Mr. B. returned home, and a representative visited him in the hospital to encourage and support him as he began his recovery.
“Thanks to their help, I was able to focus on getting better without fear of losing my home,” said a grateful Mr. B. “I hope to recover quickly and return to work soon.”
The Helping Hands Emergency Financial Assistance Program exemplifies FISH’s “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” mission. FISH provides critical financial relief to island residents facing unforeseen challenges, ensuring they have the stability and resources they need to move forward.
