Since Hurricane Ian struck the community two years ago, FISH of SANCAP continues to offer vital mental health support through one-on-one counseling sessions in partnership with SalusCare.
These sessions have proven to be a lifeline for many residents still processing the emotional impact of the devastating storm. “I like the convenience of being able to stay on the island and get mental health care because there are no other options available,” said an anonymous FISH client.
“I have been using the service since the beginning, which has helped me tremendously. I have PTSD from Hurricane Ian and every time there is a storm advisory, I would panic,” said the client.
The client also shared they have learned coping skills to help during distress. FISH has been instrumental in their continued ability to live on the island, and they feel they will continue to heal with the help of FISH.
The collaboration with SalusCare is partly made possible through funding from the Sanibel-Captiva Rotary Club. It has made mental health resources accessible on the island and allowed people to find ways to cope with the storm’s aftermath.
“Our goal is to ensure that no one feels alone in their struggles,” said FISH Executive Director Maria Espinoza. “We are deeply committed to supporting the mental well-being of our community, particularly after such a traumatic event as Hurricane Ian. Our partnership with SalusCare allows us to provide essential services that make a huge difference in people’s lives.”
FISH has seen a significant positive impact on those seeking assistance with mental health issues, and it remains persistent in its mission to serve and support the residents and workforce of Sanibel and Captiva.
The mental health program offers flexibility and is designed to meet the unique needs of each person, from storm-related PTSD to the stress of everyday life. For more information, contact Erika Arnowitz at 239-472-4775 or send her an email at erika@fishofsancap.org.
