FISH of SANCAP, the islands social services organization, welcomes new participants to its Smile Box program, which began at the onset of the COVID pandemic. It was inspired by the subscription box trend in which participants receive boxes of products and goodies regularly. They are designed to provide comfort and joy to island seniors.
FISH quickly realized the positive impact of the Smile Boxes and incorporated the program into a regular monthly offering. It grew steadily, but was halted due to Hurricane Ian in September 2022. Now, FISH has reinstated it and is welcoming newcomers.
FISH works closely with Community Housing & Resources, Sanibel and Captiva churches, and others to stay informed of those who might need a Smile Box.
“It truly is an honor to serve our seniors and the community,” said FISH Senior Services Director Erika Broyles. “It brings me such joy to work with our older population. When I began working at FISH over two years ago, I could never have imagined all of the wonderful people I would meet and get to know. The conversations we have, stories I hear and heartfelt thanks from community members are truly a gift that fills my heart.”
Broyles notes island seniors truly appreciate this program and those that help the organization fulfill it. The Smile Box program is available through assistance from supporters and volunteers of FISH.
“Erika and FISH, you are the best,” notes one senior in a card to FISH. “The Smile Box had so many great items, every one was just perfect — the Chapstick® for this cold weather, the real maple syrup for oatmeal on these cold mornings, the fun and delicious food items — everything ‘hit out of the park’. I pray your day, week, year is filled with so many blessings that you can’t stop smiling and giving thanks. You are a beautiful blessing to Sanibel.”
