Council awarded a $298,756 contract to Bateman Contracting for the Shared Use Path repair project. In February, council discussed much-needed repairs and safety concerns. All of them agreed then it was time for maintenance after two years.

Maintenance of the extensive path system was deferred during the pandemic in response to concerns over potential revenue shortfalls. While most of the 25 miles of Shared Use Path is in good shape, there are breaks and cracks, especially along Sanibel Captiva Road.

The long-discussed path expansion and improvement on Palm Ridge Road moved forward Tuesday with the approval of a resolution (22-019) to fund the project. The $256,511 will be transferred from the $1.6 million road impact fee fund.

Other approved items:

– A $765,317 street resurfacing project this year includes Sanibel Captiva Road from Tarpon Bay to Rabbit roads and Middle Gulf Drive from Fulgar Street to Casa Ybel Drive.

– An agreement between Lee County School Board and city for a School Resource Officer from August 2022 to July 2023 at the Sanibel School.

– Resolution in support of the Northern Estuaries Restoration Plan or NERP Act introduced by Congressman Brian Mast. It’s also known as the HR 7520 bill.

– The city maintains the concrete bridge/box culvert which provides access to a home on Bay Drive. A repair contract for $134,900 was awarded to Manhattan Road & Bridge Company.

– Resolution adopting the five-year Lee County Joint Local Mitigation Strategy in the event of a man-made or natural disaster. It expires this year.

– Resolution to correctly appoint Jennifer Maughan as an adjunct member of the Vegetation Committee. She was initially appointed as a full member.
