the following is a guest opinion article written by Charitable Foundation of the Islands Board Member and Marketing Chair Rachel Pierce
My mom has always told me, “Half the battle is showing up.” Mom you were right.
During my very first month living on Sanibel, I spotted an ad in this newspaper looking for someone to serve on the city’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinating Committee. I was brand new to the island, barely knew anyone, but thought, why not?
So I raised my hand.
That one little newspaper ad was the beginning of my involvement in a community I’ve grown to love so much. And here’s what I’ve learned along the way: You don’t have to wait to be asked. One of the things I love most about Sanibel and Captiva isn’t just our beautiful beaches, wildlife, sunsets or, of course, the shelling. And if you know me, you know I could probably write an entire column about that last one!
But what truly makes our islands special is the people who show up for one another. I’ve tried to teach that same lesson to my four children. My girls especially love being counselors in training at Sanibel Sea School. Lydia has helped serve tables at Community House events, and Piper has participated in beach cleanups. None of these are grand gestures. But that’s exactly the point.
Small acts add up.
Sometimes generosity means writing a check. Other times it’s giving up a Saturday morning, sharing a skill, helping at an event or simply making someone feel welcome.
As a board member of the Charitable Foundation of the Islands, I get to see just how much our community accomplishes when people come together. But you don’t need a board position, a big bank account or even a lot of free time to make a difference.
You just need a willingness to get involved.
As another busy island season begins, I encourage you to find something that speaks to you. Volunteer for a cause you care about. Bring your kids along. Thank someone who quietly gives their time. Or take a chance on something you’ve never done before. And if you see a little ad in the newspaper asking for help, don’t be afraid to answer it. You never know where it might lead.
My mom was right. Half the battle really is showing up. And you matter more than you know.
