Kiwanis Club Hosts Director Keith Williams as Guest Speaker

provided to Santiva Chronicle

Local Kiwanis Club members recently heard a presentation from Keith Williams, Director of Sanibel’s Department of Community Services, detailing current and future City projects. Director Williams’ position was created last year to oversee the combined operations of the City’s Building, Planning and Public Works functions. His talk was part of a series of interesting guest speakers who address the Club at their Tuesday morning breakfast meetings.

Director Williams came to his current position well experienced, with over 13 years of experience in public service and 5 years of experience in private sector land development, utility and transportation engineering. He came to Sanibel as Director of Public Works in 2012, having previously served as City Engineer for the city of Smyrna, GA.

In his remarks, Director Williams concentrated on major City projects which affect Sanibel residents, including:

A new online permitting system, coming this spring, which will streamline the application process.

A new system for licensing and regulating rentals of private homes on the Island, which will prevent proliferation of non-complying short term rentals. This will enforce Sanibel’s requirement that private home rentals be for a minimum of 4 weeks.

Emergency beach repairs, being made in the Santiva area near the intersection of San Cap Road and Pine Avenue, where severe beach erosion has been encroaching on the San Cap roadway.

A new, improved walkover bridge at the entrance to Bowman’s Beach, paid for with funds received from Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau.

An upcoming plan for dredging of the canal entry point at Sanibel Marina.

Continued progress of improvements to the Donax Water Treatment Facility, which when completed will increase its capacity and improve the quality of treated water released from the plant. Completion of this project is expected in early 2021.
