Lee County BOCC Awards Contract For Road Resiliency Project Near Blind Pass

The Lee Board of County Commissioners voted Tuesday, May 19, to award a contract for engineering services for a project to provide additional structural hardening to make Sanibel-Captiva Road and Captiva Drive more resilient to storm surge on both sides of Blind Pass.

The scope of the resiliency project also includes stormwater management improvements, sewer force main relocation, and structural hardening, with design, permitting, and post-design services provided.

This project highlights the county’s partnership with the City of Sanibel to improve a city street (Sanibel-Captiva Road) and a county street (Captiva Drive) via a unified design to better ensure connectivity on a key transportation link between the two islands.

The $874,907 engineering services contract with HighSpans Engineering is part of the estimated $4.8 million project, which is funded through the Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery Program (CDBG-DR).

Construction for the project is expected to begin in February 2028 and be completed in March 2029.

As part of the ResilientLee Recovery and Resilience Plan, the Lee Board of County Commissioners has committed to strengthening the resiliency of the county’s transportation infrastructure, which also includes recent projects on area bridges as well as Burnt Store and Pine Island roads.
