LETTER: Roundabout Makes Sense for Sanibel Traffic

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Santiva Chronicle publishes opinions and letters on topics that are important to Sanibel and Captiva. They may be submitted via e-mail at news@santivachronicle.com.

Saw a news feature on how Lee County solved a traffic issue by installing a roundabout with a water feature. Well proves to me Lee County is smarter than Sanibel Island when it comes to handling traffic in a safe plus environmentally enhancing manner keeping the vehicles moving eliminating 4 way traffic guard congestion points.

Roundabouts are proven safer solutions ask any qualified traffic engineer! Sanibel Island needs to lose the 4 way intersections permanently that stop traffic from movements, spewing fumes idling. Roundabouts will also save money every year of needless increasing repeat traffic guard expenses.

  1. Roundabouts are a safety hazard. People in a hurry will always push through first, and try to do it at high speed because, hey, there’s no light! I know nobody should be hurrying on Sanibel, but come tourist season? Free for all.

  2. That would be one extremely tight roundabout and what about the bicycle riders ? We have discussed this publicly several times and come to the conclusion that it would not work. If length of ownership confers wisdom, we bought our Sanibel property in 1980 and built our house in 1984.

  3. One perfect place for a roundabout is the intersection of SandCap Rd and Rabbit Rd.
