Library Defers Decision on New Board Member

by SC Reporter Wendy McMullen

The board of the Sanibel Public Library postponed a decision on a new member after each of the four commissioners in attendance voted for a different candidate. Board member Roy Gibson was in attendance via Zoom but unable to vote.

Seven candidates have applied to serve on the board, They are Leslie Cimino, Robin Coleman, Matthew Gaudreau, Shelley Greggs, Linda Hines, Patricia Norton and Susan Wener.

Board membership became controversial after some members of the community objected to books in the children’s section that appeared to normalize non-typical gender roles.

The seat on the library board became vacant after board member Barbara Ruben moved off the island and had to resign.

The Sanibel Public Library has won Library Journal’s national Star Library Awards in five of the last 10 years and was ranked number one per capita in the state for items borrowed in 2021. It has also been awarded a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence almost every year since 2014.
