New Trailways Overnight Camp Supported by Sanctuary Foundation

provided to The Santiva Chronicle

Trailways Camps is introducing new opportunities for adults with special needs made possible by a presenting sponsorship of the Sanctuary Golf Club Foundation. The overnight camping experiences will operate from May 18-21. Priority placement is given to adults with special needs whose family or caregivers have Sanibel residency or are employees of Sanibel businesses or organizations.

Prior Campers waiting for 5+ years for an opportunity to return to camp can be placed after those with priority. The “In Community” model also places high priority on developing and broadening support from sponsors and partnerships with Sanibel and Captiva businesses and other community nonprofits. The Sanctuary Golf Club Foundation has communicated its intent to continue as the presenting sponsor in 2027.

The 4 day, 3 night Activity Schedule reflects new and broadened hosting and in kind community sponsorships including Sanibel Community Church, Sanibel-Captiva Kiwanis Club, The Sanibel Island Beach Resort, Sanctuary Golf Club, The Community House, Captiva Cruises, island restaurants such as Rosalita’s, Sanibel Café, Sanibel Deli, The Shell Museum, Sanibel Sea School, Tarpon Bay Explorers, bicycle and mobility providers and other local vendors as arrangements proceed.

Informational communications and meetings have been held with city officials, including elected leaders, police, fire,, emergency, and rescue officials, to ensure close coordination on activity locations, walkways, bicycle paths, traffic crossings, etc. Health and safety protocols are a high priority for Trailways Camps. Operational staffing and volunteers are carefully trained and assigned to maintain the high-quality outcomes that characterize Trailways Camps.

Operational leadership is provided by Jamie Senkeleski, Executive Director, and her experienced team, including on-site registered nurses, 24-hour certified nursing assistance, and small-group counselors, aided by assigned volunteer “buddies” and activity volunteers. 80 plus volunteers are registered to serve on specific days and times during the camp session.

Trailways Camps Board members and Advisors participate as active volunteers throughout the camp week. We are so grateful for the generous presenting partnership of the Sanctuary Golf Club Foundation and for all the community partners that are establishing a foundation for reflecting the “Courage to Care”, Jerry Miller, Chair of the Board.
