Osprey Recovers From Wing Fracture At CROW

Editor’s Note: The Osprey is part of the CROW CAW (Case A Week) series, which tells the stories of the patients at the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife on Sanibel Island, the dangers they face, and how we can help protect all of our wildlife. Read previous cases here.

This Osprey is recovering from a fractured wing.

Ospreys are extremely fascinating birds due to their specialized hunting methods, impressive adaptability, and worldwide presence. These majestic birds are expert fishers partially due to their reversible outer toes, which allow them to grasp fish more securely. Ospreys can be found on every continent except Antarctica. These birds migrate seasonally, traveling from breeding grounds up north to warmer regions, such as Florida, in the winter. Ospreys can live up to 15-20 years in the wild, although many have shorter lifespans due to predation, accidents, and environmental hazards.

This Osprey (24-4539) was admitted to CROW after it was seen crashing into the water. Upon admission, staff noticed the patient had a left-wing fracture. Due to the fracture’s placement and nature, staff decided to place a pin in the wing to ensure the fracture healed correctly. Staff wrapped the wing to avoid damage and gave the patient pain medication and supportive care to ensure a successful return to the wild.

Since surgery, the patient has been receiving physical therapy every three days. The treatment helps the fracture to maintain a full range of motion while it continues to heal. Staff continue closely monitoring the wound and changing the wing wrap when necessary. In addition to physical therapy and bandage changes, the Osprey receives pain medication and supportive care, such as force-feeds, as it recovers.
