Planning Commission to Review Wine Shop, Equipment Regulations at Oct. 27 Meeting

The City of Sanibel Planning Commission will meet on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, to consider two proposed amendments to the City’s Land Development Code. The proposed changes address wine consumption at retail wine shops and regulations related to certain electrical and mechanical equipment on residential and commercial properties.

The public hearings will begin at 9:05 a.m. in MacKenzie Hall at Sanibel City Hall, 800 Dunlop Road.

The following items are scheduled for consideration:

Retail Wine Shops with On-Site Consumption
The Planning Commission will discuss a potential future code amendment allowing retail wine shops to offer wine for on-premises consumption as a conditional use in commercial zoning districts. The proposed change would establish regulations for wine consumption at retail wine shops without requiring the business to operate as a restaurant.

Regulations for HVAC Equipment, Generators and Solar Energy Systems
The Planning Commission will consider a proposed amendment that would expand eligibility for administrative waivers related to the installation of air conditioning equipment, emergency generators, and solar energy system components.

Currently, certain limitations on impermeable coverage, vegetation removal,, and developed area apply to these installations. The proposed amendment would allow properties to qualify for administrative waivers regardless of when they were developed, provided they meet established eligibility criteria.
