Police Make DUI Arrest; Respond to Several Vehicle Crashes

Sanibel Police arrested an intoxicated driver and responded to several vehicle crashes, including a bicyclist who struck a truck’s trailer, last week.

An officer on patrol at 1 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20, located a suspicious vehicle behind the bushes at the Palm Ridge Plaza. Forty-four-year-old Stephen Joseph exited the vehicle and staggered toward the officer, according to the report. He told the officer he had stopped for a drink and was traveling back to his West Palm Beach, Fla., home from Collier County.

The officer suspected Joseph was intoxicated and he consented to a standard field sobriety test, which he failed. Joseph refused a breath test and was transported to the Lee County Jail and charged with driving under the influence. He was released the afternoon of Oct. 20 on a $1,000 bond. His vehicle was towed from the scene.

Janice Tauber, 67, Arlington Heights, Ill., was riding her bicycle east on the Shared Use Path along Periwinkle Way at 11:56 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, when she made a left at the crosswalk toward Jerry’s Plaza and her bicycle struck the passenger-side wheel well of a trailer attached to the vehicle of Scott Bartels, 61, Fort Myers. Tauber fell to the ground and received bruising to her left knee and hand. Her injuries were assessed by Lee County Emergency Services, but she refused transport to the hospital.

Michelle Fleishaker, 17, Fort Myers, was traveling east on Periwinkle Way at 8:18 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, when she attempted a right turn onto Sabal Street and her vehicle began to slide due to the wet road conditions from an earlier rain. Fleishaker’s vehicle struck a sea grape tree in the yard of a private residence and damaged a stop sign. She was cited for driving too fast for conditions. Her extensively-damaged vehicle was towed from the scene.

Christopher Dalton, 48, Sanibel, was traveling east on Periwinkle Way at 4:05 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, when he stopped briefly before entering the intersection of Lindgren Boulevard and his vehicle struck a vehicle operated by Michael Horne, 45, Kingsport, Tenn., which was in the intersection. It was determined Horne had the right of way.
