Police Make DUI Arrest, Respond to Vehicle Crash Last Week

Rene Cazares of Fort Myers was arrested for driving under the influence after a Sanibel Police Officer observed his vehicle traveling “all over the road” in the early morning hours of Monday, May 17.

Cazares was traveling west on Periwinkle Way, in the middle of the road and stopping several times before the officer stopped his vehicle. Cazares told the officer he thought he was at Pine Minor in Fort Myers and admitted to drinking two beers. But officers found numerous empty beer bottles throughout the vehicle.

Cazares declined a field sobriety test and was transported to the Lee County Jail, where he also refused a breathalizer test. Cazares was issued citations for driving under the influence and no driver’s license. He was released from the Lee County Jail later that same morning on a $1,000 bond.

Police responded to a two-vehicle crash at 5:57 p.m. Monday, May 17 at the Sanibel Boat Ramp parking lot. Jean Bozich of Minnesota was stopped at the mailbox, when the back of her vehicle was struck by a mail truck operated by Luis Velasquez of Lehigh Acres, Fla. No injuries were reported.
