Possibly Intoxicated Driver Rescued From Vehicle After Crash

Sanibel Police Officers responded to an accident scene where a possibly intoxicated driver was trapped inside the vehicle.

Erich Garton was traveling east on Sanibel Captiva Road near mile marker one at 2:04 p.m. Friday, July 31, when he noticed a vehicle behind him was traveling erratically and at a high speed. Garton told officers he knew the vehicle was about to collide with the back of his, so he moved to the left side of the roadway to avoid a collision.

However, the vehicle, operated by 25-year-old Wendy Silva of Fort Myers, struck the back of Garton’s vehicle causing her to lose control and leave the roadway. Silva’s vehicle came to rest in the brush. She was trapped inside the vehicle and temporarily unconscious.

Sanibel Fire and Rescue arrived on the scene and used the jaws of life to remove Silva from the vehicle. Lee County Emergency Medical Services transported her to Lee Health Park in Fort Myers to be checked for injuries. She was medically cleared and did not have any signs of a concussion or head trauma, according to the report.

Officers discovered a clear plastic bag containing an alcoholic beverage on the passenger floor of Silva’s vehicle. Officers also smelled alcohol on her and she exhibited signs of intoxication at the hospital. An officer took a blood sample from Silva at the hospital and charges are pending.

Later that same day, officers responded to Periwinkle Place shopping center where a child was injured by a vehicle in the parking lot. Timothy Green of Sanibel was slowly traveling through the parking lot when a little girl ran into the rear passenger side of his vehicle and the back tire rolled over her left foot.

A witness told officers she observed the child run towards her mother and did not see Green’s vehicle in time to avoid running into the side of his vehicle. The little girl was transported to Golisano’s Children’s Hospital in Fort Myers for treatment. Officers determined Green was not a fault based on the witness statement and evidence at the scene, according to the report.
