Public Meeting Scheduled On Captiva Wastewater Options

provided to Santiva Chronicle

The Captiva community is invited to a public meeting on the island’s wastewater findings and alternatives at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, at the Captiva Civic Center. The workshop will be presented by the Captiva Community Panel.

David Tomasko, Ph.D., with Environmental Science Associates will provide a review of his recent study regarding potential health and environmental risks associated with septic systems, addressing both potential pollution concerns and how island septic systems will function in the face of rising sea levels and groundwater levels. Wastewater Committee chair Jay Brown will follow with a discussion of Captiva’s wastewater alternatives and the extensive research on the current status and options he and the committee have conducted over the past two years.

Public questions and comment will be encouraged to provide feedback for the Panel to consider in its development of a long-term wastewater strategy recommendation, and to help guide continuing research efforts.
