Public Review Period Opens for Periwinkle Bridge Project

The East Periwinkle Way bridge after Hurricane Ian in September 2022.

On September 28, 2022, Sanibel suffered catastrophic damage from Hurricane Ian’s 150 mph winds and storm surge of 8’ to 10’. The East Periwinkle Way bridge sustained significant damage from the storm and even though emergency repairs were completed a full replacement is required. Engineering firm, T.Y. Lin International, was contracted by the City for the design and permitting of a resilient bridge capable of withstanding future storm events to replace the East Periwinkle Way Bridge.

The reconstruction is to be partially funded by a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grant in the amount of $5,500,000. As a part of the continuing design and permitting process HUD requires the City provide public notice that the subject bridge replacement project is located within a floodplain. The HUD notice can be reviewed on the City’s website by clicking here.

The City of Sanibel will receive written comments pertaining to the HUD floodplain activity notice at: City of Sanibel, 800 Dunlop Road, Sanibel, FL 33957, Attention: Scotty Lynn Kelly, City Clerk. Comments may also be submitted via email at CityClerk@MySanibel.com through the period stated in the notice.
