Rotarians Hear About Growing Organic Vegetable Garden On Island

Resident Frances Tutt recently shared her experiences and tips on creating a thriving, organic vegetable garden on the islands with the Sanibel-Captiva Rotary Club.

Rotarians Ralph Quillen, left, Logan Lee, Don McDonald, Tommy Williams, Guest Speaker Frances Tutt, Sally Haynes, Rachel Tritaik, Eldon Bohrofen, Paul Hawkins and Jennifer Lusk with their new cuttings ready to become thriving Florida plants.

Tutt has learned that Southwest Florida is a unique and challenging ecosystem, much different from the one she gardened in Maryland. She has provided resources to help gardeners of all levels through books and YouTube video recommendations.

Tutt had unique experiences as a food scientist for McCormick & Company, a Maryland spice and extract manufacturing company. She worked for McCormick for 30 years in the industrial flavor division and, before retiring as a principal scientist in 2018, worked with flavor chemists to develop beverages for substantial manufacturing companies such as Anheuser-Busch.

Tutt donated plants, Everglade tomatoes, and other cuttings for auction.
